Dirt in the guides is the main cause of wear
In practice, most wear is caused by dirt and sand in the guides. This creates additional resistance and can cause the shutter to jam. Therefore, clean the guides regularly using a cloth and a suitable cleaning agent. Make sure to remove sand carefully. After cleaning, spray the guides and rubber seals with a non-greasy PTFE spray. Do not use grease. Grease attracts dirt and will have a negative effect over time.
Check rubber seals and fixings
While cleaning, it is wise to perform a visual inspection. Check that the countersunk bolts in the side guides are not protruding. It may seem like a small detail, but it can be enough to cause the shutter to catch during opening or closing. Also inspect the side seals as well as the top and bottom seals. Damaged or worn rubber seals can lead to water leakage. Replacing them in time helps prevent more serious issues.
Pay attention to sliding blocks and spring tension
The sliding blocks in the aluminium intermediate profiles ensure proper guidance of the shutter. Check that they are present, not worn, and securely fixed. If they are missing, the shutter will no longer function as intended. Does the shutter feel heavy or uneven when opening or closing? First check whether the guides are clean and properly lubricated. Only then adjust the spring tension if necessary. A properly adjusted shutter should move with approximately the same force in both directions.
Handles, locks and exterior
Handles and locks also require attention. Lightly lubricate a key lock with PTFE spray approximately once every two months. Also check that everything operates smoothly and is free from damage. Finally, clean the exterior regularly using a suitable cleaning agent for anodised aluminium. This prevents the material from becoming dull or damaged and keeps the shutter looking clean and well maintained.
How often should maintenance be carried out?
We recommend carrying out these checks at least twice a year, depending on the intensity of use. Is the shutter used intensively on a daily basis or exposed to harsh conditions? Then more frequent inspections are advisable.
